My Beloved Hutch: What’s Old, New, and How To Collect Pieces You’ll Love

This beautiful 100+ year old antique pie safe hutch was my great-grandmother’s. I was lucky enough to inherit it 11 years ago and it’s no doubt my favorite piece of furniture I own. I love all of the character this piece holds in every dent and scratch. It’s the kind of character that can’t be replicated- the kind that comes from seeing lots of life.

Because it is so special to me, it has become the home for many of my collected pieces and trinkets.

I have slowly been collecting these Nathalie Lete plates for awhile now. I am obsessed with the details and vibrant colors! Each plate is unique and quirky and I love that. Unfortunately, they no longer carry these at Anthropologie so I keep my eyes peeled for them on resale sites and when I’m out thrifting. The hummingbird plate is my personal favorite. <3

Many of the items in this hutch were given to me by my grandma. These glasses she gave me have a fun cube detail on the stem. I’ve had this piece of artwork from Lindsay Letters Co. for awhile now. It’s one of my absolute favorites! (I love her work!)

I knew I wanted some functional lighting in the hutch. Not only to highlight my treasures, but to pull out and use for a table-scape or for additional task lighting in the evenings. There’s only 12.5″ spacing between each shelf so it really limited what kind of lamps I could use. I found these great rechargeable lamps on Amazon that come with an additional piece to extend their height. One of my newer additions is this salt/pepper mill. The other color I wanted is finally back in stock so it will have a buddy very soon!

I have found that the times I try to rush to put a space together or fill a hole, I tend to regret it (or get crabby because I’m trying to do too much at once). Unfortunately, It’s taken some time (and some flubs) for me to recognize this. My favorite spaces in the house are the ones that have organically come together over time.

To combat decision fatigue, I have a list of items I’m seeking out on my phone that I will reference when I pop into thrift stores. This helps give me some guidance when I shop. I have been on the hunt for vintage dinnerware for quite some time, but finally scored at Goodwill the other day. I found some stunning gold-trimmed dinnerware that stopped me dead in my tracks! I picked up some plates and teacups with saucers. I’m going to pop back in there tomorrow and (fingers crossed) they’ll still have the bowls! If your gut is telling you that you really love it, it’s probably meant to be. If it feels forced to “fill a space”- leave it. Wait until you find something that makes your heart skip a beat!

A few years ago, Anthropologie had a pear cookie jar on their site that I LOVED. I so badly wanted it! It was quirky, cute, and of course those two reasons were enough for me to fixate on it. It was clearly vintage inspired so I kept my eyes peeled when I was at antique stores in hopes of finding something similar. I just so happened to do a quick Ebay search last year and found this beauty! She was old and arrived broken, but I glued her together and now she gets to sit pretty in my cabinet.

If you are in the market for a cabinet or hutch, Facebook Marketplace is your friend! It is such a great tool to find pieces locally. Set up a saved search so that you are notified when new listings are posted with the keywords you had saved. I try to pop on there twice a day and briefly check my saved searches.

Every so often, I will swap and re-arrange the items in the cabinet. I keep additional serve ware, cookbooks, glasses, etc below. I love the extra storage and the fact that the cabinet is not completely exposed. I don’t want to display my holiday pieces all year round, nor do I want to box them up and put them in storage in-between seasons.

I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a beloved heirloom piece in your home? How about a collection that makes you smile every time you walk by it? Tag me at @theeverydayreverie on Instagram. I’d love to see it. Comment below if you have any questions!
