Brooks’ bedroom has been slowly coming together since last August. When we got home from the lake last summer, he let me know that he wanted his room to be “lake themed”. It’s his favorite place on Earth- we have been going yearly with him since he was a baby and my husband has been visiting the same lake his entire life, too!
What Brooks didn’t know is that I had some really special pieces I was hanging onto until they had the perfect place to reside. Years ago, I had found old vintage fishing maps of the chain of lakes in northern Wisconsin that we visit annually on Ebay. I ordered them, had them custom framed, and they had been sitting in storage ever since. My initial plan was to save them for a home office, but when Brooks asked me for a lake themed room it was a no-brainer to display them in his room!

When it came to choosing a color palette for his room, I wanted it to evoke that calming feeling of the “Northwoods”. I landed on Evergreen Fog from Sherwin Williams in a matte finish for the board and batten wall treatment. The upper walls are Agreeable Gray from Sherwin Williams. We had planned to wallpaper the upper walls, but decided against it for now (wallpaper is $$$). Evergreen Fog is such a beautiful color!! I’m obsessed with it!
I’ve had the name pennant for a few years and I love the heirloom quality of it! The owner of the shop hand stitches each pennant and they are completely customizable. You can get your own custom name pennant HERE.

Lantern Table Lamp // Plaid area rug // Night stand (similar)// gingham sheet set // duvet insert // linen duvet cover // boucle throw blanket // euro pillow insert // linen euro sham // Lake canvas poster // black spindle bed // blackout curtains
This plaid rug from the Chris Loves Julia x Loloi collection is beautiful, but it’s even prettier in person! I love that there’s lots of color to it, but it isn’t “busy” to my eye. If Brooks ever grows tired of it, I will certainly place it elsewhere because it is not only gorgeous, but it’s soft.
Leaning into the “collected” feel of the room, I ordered a pennant flag to display all of our fishing buttons- some from my husband’s childhood, some from Brooks’. Every summer, we get to pick up a new one from the bait shop in the little town we vacation at. The yellow one is my favorite!

Dresser Swap
We had an IKEA Hemnes dresser in Brooks’ room since he was born. It was actually one of the first furniture purchases we made for his nursery! It seemed like back in 2019, it was the thing to have the Hemnes dresser in a nursery (it was allllll over Pinterest!). I love the storage it provides- we still have one in Harper’s room that I refinished a couple of months ago, but for Brooks’ room, I wanted a tallboy dresser. I wanted to give him room to play with his Legos, build with magnetic tiles, and sprawl out. He also loves to draw so I may start looking for a desk. You can see examples of his old dresser in his nursery HERE.
Brooks’ Old Dresser

Current Dresser

I scored this beautiful antique dresser for $70 on Facebook Marketplace! It is BEAUTIFUL! It squeaks a little when you open certain drawers, but it adds to the charm of the piece. The warm wood compliments the green board and batten and brings a cozy element to the space. I don’t feel like I sacrificed storage swapping to the tall boy dresser. Does it have less storage? Yes. However, I found that many of the dresser drawers in the IKEA dresser were empty or were items that could be easily stored in his closet.

Bed Details

Comfy bedding is a must! A bedroom can look cute, but if the bedding isn’t comfortable, then the room doesn’t truly serve its purpose. This duvet insert is plush and cozy- added bonus that it’s a down alternative insert. We have asthma and down feathers tend to stir us up. I intentionally purchased the euro pillow in a 30×30″ size so it was a little over-filled in the pillow cover.
I’m a sucker for a spindle bed! The spindle bed I found for his room a couple of years ago was quite affordable compared to others I had seen and has held up quite well to the wear and tear of a 4-6 year old boy.
This canvas poster was on my vision board when I was imagining this northwoodsy room for Brooks. One of his favorite things to do when we are up at the lake is run and jump off of the dock over and over! It’s truly the best. Of course, when I came across this poster I knew it needed a place in his room. I thrifted the picture frame from Goodwill, sanded and stained the wood in special walnut, then flipped the old print in the frame to use as a mat.

How cute is this lantern lamp?! I found it on Etsy and it puts off the most beautiful warm light. Brooks actually found the fish drawer knobs at Hobby Lobby. We were wandering through there looking for some craft supplies and he got so excited when he found these!! It’s little details like the knobs that immediately make me smile when I walk into his room.

It feels like these seasons of life come and go so quickly. I swear it was only yesterday I was dreaming up his nursery and now he has helped put together a space that feels unique to him. I’m going to do my best to soak it up and enjoy this season we are in. Summer is quickly approaching and with that means another trip up to the lake. Who knows, maybe while we are there he will stumble upon something special to bring home and display in his new room.
New to the blog? I was inspired to start it while we were on our lake trip last summer! You can read more about that HERE.
